What do you do when you walk to your classroom at school and there is caution tape on the door and the room is darker than usual? Since it was Halloween, students in Mrs. Singletary’s class decided to venture in to see what they could find. They were surprised to see that there were miniature doors posted all around the room along with many other Halloween math stations. Students were greeted by Mrs. Singletary who handed each person a clipboard with paper and pencil.
As they headed to each door posted around the room, they found a math word problem written on the front with an answer to the problem included.
Students had to work the problems to figure out if they answer was a trick (the wrong answer) or a treat (the right answer). After working out the problem, the students opened the miniature door and saw the word “trick” or “treat” to check their answers.
In addition to the Trick or Treating, the students were given the opportunity to “Bob for Apples”. They drew an apple from a paper bag that contained other math word problems for them to solve. After solving those equations, the students went back to the bag and “bobbed” for apples again.
Students discovered that learning and having fun can be done at the same time, especially on Halloween!
