Westwind Elementary Principal
Hello and welcome to Westwind!

My name is Dawn Powell.  I am deeply honored and excited to work with the Frenship Tigers as the Westwind Principal.

I have been in education for 24 years.  I bring a wealth of experience and passion for providing students with an exemplary education.  I was raised in San Diego, California and dedicated 19 years with the San Diego Unified School District.  I have served students through many different roles, including elementary school teacher (1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th), mentor teacher, peer coach, assistant principal, and principal.

In 2018, we decided to move our family to Lubbock, TX.  Leaving my family, friends and career behind was one of the hardest decisions of my life.  Our family of 5 moved with 2 horses and 3 dogs in tow.  What made us pick Lubbock? Well, my husband is from Lorenzo, TX.  The US Marine Corp. brought him to San Diego after 3 years in Japan and 2 tours to Iraq.  Once our oldest son reached high school, we decided it was time to move to Texas to give our 3 boys the small-town experience and get to know the family here.

To grow an understanding for teaching in Texas, I decided it would be best to start in the classroom.  I accepted a 4th grade position with Lubbock ISD.  It was a lot of fun to be back on the floor with the students, teaching my students how to love reading and learning through the adventures of many great books.  I was moved to Assistant Principal the following year.  Through all my experiences I am committed to fostering a collaborative and supportive educational environment to improve student outcomes and school performance.

There are no limits to what we can achieve at Westwind this year!
