Doing Good in the Neighborhood: Westwind Elementary Makes a Difference this Holiday Season

By Angela Howard

WW Christmas Letters"It is better to give than to receive." That was what one fourth-grade student at Westwind Elementary said as they added finishing touches on a special Christmas card headed to a special address.

Mrs. Gilmore's class heard about a project in the community called "Hopeful Holidays" that aims to bring a smile to residents in local nursing homes who typically don't have family in town and may not receive many visitors or gifts over the holidays.

“It makes us feel sad at the thought that they might have to be alone and lonely during the Christmas holidays," said another student. "We really wanted to do something to help, so we did our very best. We hope they feel good because they get to receive something.”

Students were thrilled to get involved and jumped at the idea of brightening up someone's day. "It is better to give than to receive," said another student as they colored their card. The entire fourth-grade class created beautiful cards full of heartfelt messages to send to Hopeful Holidays.

“This is the season of giving, and this was just one way we could give to someone,” said another student. "We are truly embracing the Christmas spirit by giving to others.”

Fox 34 News partnered with Hopeful Holidays and visited Westwind to watch the students make their Christmas cards. Their story will air Sunday night, December 22, on Fox 34 Lubbock at 9 PM during “Doing Good in the Neighborhood.”
