Westwind Elementary Students to Celebrate all Countries Represented at Westwind

It started with an idea from Westwind Art Teacher Amber Wilhite. She explained that eight different cultures will be represented by varying table décor at the school's annual family Christmas lunch.

"I just felt that during our Christmas lunch this year we could showcase different cultures and how they celebrate this time of year," Wilhite said. "Especially since not everyone celebrates Christmas the same way, or even at all."

Wilhite said her art students are working on decorations that honor the celebration of Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Bodhi Day, St. Lucy, the Chinese New Year, Los Posadas, and they are including Santa's from around the world. There will even be some Grinch and gingerbread themed décor on display.

"Our school is very diverse, so i spoke with our ESL teacher Mrs. Reavis and got a list from her," Wilhite said. "Some of our kids celebrate both their cultural holiday celebration and a traditional Christmas celebration."

Wilhite said she wanted every student and their family to feel included and honored a the festivities.

"It is so important to make sure the kiddos are seen and loved," Wilhite said. "I honestly believe that this type of inclusivity is so necessary for them to learn to accept others for who they are, and to celebrate their differences."
