Area 17 Special Olympics Bowling took place this past weekend at South Plains Lanes, with 22 athletes representing Frenship at the tournament.  

Special Olympics Bowling has a long history at Frenship, starting in 1992 by Karen Mitchell who was the Life Skills teacher at Frenship High School and Sherry Airhart who was the Life skills teacher at Bennett Intermediate School. The current coaches are Aaron Tomlinson and Cody Coyle. 

While bowling is not an Olympic sport, it is one of the most popular events in the Special Olympics. The athletes are taken to the bowling lanes a few times to practice before the competition. The coaches determine what equipment each athlete will use during the competition. They take several scores and average them together to be sent into Area 17 Special Olympics administrators. They are then placed in heats with other schools in our area and compete for medals in the competition. 

“We hope to carry on the tradition that Karen and Sherry started.” said Tomlinson. “There is so much that must be done for us to compete. We'd like to say thank you to everyone for all the help this year!” 

The athletes had a blast at the tournament with serval of them winning medals. Congratulations!
