Elementary Students Earn Their Green Thumbs

Earlier in the semester, the students started this lesson with a few tiny seeds. They watched them grow and followed along as they bloomed into vegetables that they recognized.  

“We want students to see that they can follow the seed we planted into vegetables that we can eat for nourishment to help us stay healthy,” said Lesley Rundell, second grade teacher at Westwind Elementary. 

Second graders across the district are participating in a gardening activity.  At Westwind students are growing lettuce, spinach, radishes, and onions in outdoor garden beds. The goal is to grow a salad for the students to share.  

Students at North Ridge Elementary are taking advantage of the indoor hydroponic tower gardens in their library to grow two varieties of kale, chard, five varieties of basil, dill, and cilantro. The second graders have enjoyed fresh salads with herbs and banana/strawberry kale smoothies. They also made water infused with fresh lime and basil for the lounge for the North Ridge teachers to enjoy.
