Frenship ISD Names New Districtwide Director of Fine Arts

Dr. Smith has been with Frenship since 2020 and will officially transition into this newly created position starting the 2023-2024 school year.

For the last three years, Dr. Smith has been the Frenship ISD Lead Band Director and helped oversee several fine arts programs at the secondary level. In this new districtwide role, Dr. Smith will now serve all 14 Frenship ISD campuses and help lead all fine arts programs from elementary to high school.

“The thing that energizes me the most about this change in my role, is supporting the rest of the wonderful Frenship fine arts programs the same way I have with the band. We already have amazing theater, choir, dance, and art programs, and now we are adding orchestra for our Frenship students,” said Dr. Smith. “Frenship is growing very quickly, and with this growth comes the necessity for someone to advocate for each of these fine art programs, help each program stay current with state and local policies, and better promote community relations.”

With a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from Texas Tech University, Dr. Smith has nearly 20 years of teaching experience at the collegiate, high school, and middle school levels. Under his leadership, the Frenship High School Band has continued to see student success at the local, regional, and state level. This includes reaching the UIL State Marching Championships for the first time since 2014, a record-breaking number of Frenship students qualifying for the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest, and Frenship band students performing at a national level.

With Dr. Smith moving into the district leadership role, Frenship ISD has named longtime Frenship Tiger Scott Carter as the new Director of Bands. Carter has 24 years of experience in education with all 24 years at Frenship ISD.

Most recently, Carter has served alongside Dr. Smith as the Associate Director of Bands. He will officially take over as director for the 2023-2024 school year.
