Westwind Elementary School

Elementary Students Are Introduced to the World of String

In 2001, the Texas Tech University School of Music founded the TTU String Project. One of their goals was to provide low cost beginning string instruction to children in the Lubbock area. All of the instructors for this program are music and music education majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Instruction is offered on five string instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass and harp.

Every year, the director of the String Project reaches out to local elementary schools to find anyone interested in hosting a demonstration. This gives the program volunteers a chance to speak to the kids to see if they are interested in learning a string instrument and how to register for the program.

Westwind Elementary decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to expose the students to the world of string instruments, since Frenship ISD recently launched an orchestra program.

“I believe this is a great way to introduce them to the different string instruments that are options for them to play in the Frenship Orchestra when they get to Middle School,” said Westwind music teacher, Colleen Wardlaw.

The students got to hear the instruments performed by master harp teacher, Rachel Mazzucco and learn about the classes and performance opportunities as well as information on the String Project’s Open House. The music students also enjoyed the opportunity to hold and try instruments themselves.

“The kids already have a great understanding of the band instruments and this way we can help our new orchestra department get off to a strong start these first several years,” said Wardlaw.

The Texas Tech University String Project will host an open house on Tuesday, September 12 in room 124 of the TTU School of Music. The open house will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. attendees will have an opportunity to try the instruments out and learn about the classes offered.
