Lip Sync Battle 2024: A Westwind Tradition of Music, Laughter, and Community

This beloved event, put together by the Student Council, isn't just about showing off cool lip-syncing and dance skills. It's also about working together as a team to bring an entertaining performance to the stage.

"We call it a Battle, but the clear winners are all the participants. Students just love seeing their current and previous teachers perform. The Student Council truly learns the value of collaboration and teamwork," said Westwind Counselor Qualimetra Chapman.

Outside of hosting the event, STUCO also performs their own acts. This year, they decided on three different acts because of their diverse interest in music. They used their meeting time to practice along with getting together during recess to perfect their performance. Their dedication and passion shine through in each meticulously rehearsed act, adding an extra layer of excitement to the festivities.

"The purpose of Student council hosting the lip sync battle is to give them a platform and fun way to bring together the skills they have learned with communication, collaboration, respect for each other's ideas, commitment to meetings and rehearsals, teamwork, creativity, adaptability, and enthusiasm," said Chapman. "It also gives students another facet of their teachers. Teachers also get an opportunity to show students a fun side of them that usually brings plenty of laughter and excitement."

However, the Lip Sync Battle is more than just a showcase of talent; it's a celebration of unity and camaraderie. Throughout the event, the audience is treated to a variety of performances, each one ending in cheers and applause from the crowd. From surprise proposals to energetic dance routines, every act brings something special to the stage.

"Love is an Open Door," had the surprise proposal as viewed in the movie, Frozen. The kids went wild when they saw the gentleman get on one knee. A group performed, "Single Ladies," by Beyonce, and the crowd roared at many of familiar dance moves. When the group of gentlemen performed "Old Town Road," every voice in the cafeteria sang as loudly as they could.

But perhaps the most heartwarming aspect of the Lip Sync Battle is its ability to bring the entire Westwind community together. As parents join their children on stage for an impromptu dance to close out the show, it's clear that this is more than just a school activity, it’s a way to bring people together.

"Every single year, students mention how they are so proud of themselves. That is my favorite part," said Chapman with a smile. It's moments like these that truly make the Lip Sync Battle a cherished tradition at Westwind Elementary, leaving a lasting impact on all who participate.
